What is a 6-String Banjo?

A 6-string banjo is tuned like a guitar. The sixth string is a bass string added between the lowest string and the drone string on a five-string banjo. Six-string banjos are sometimes known as a banjo guitar because they consist of a six-string guitar neck attached to a bluegrass or plectrum banjo body. This allows players who have learned the guitar to play a banjo sound without having to relearn fingerings. Many guitar players choose to start with the 6-string banjo when crossing over from guitar to banjo. Guitarists choose this banjo, not to replace their guitar, but to build on what they already know.

Although 6-string banjos make it convenient for guitar players to learn to play banjo this is not why they were invented. In the mid-1900s the banjo was a much more popular instrument than the guitar, so there was no need to make a banjo that made it easier for a small group of guitarists to play it. They were invented to give Tenor banjo players access to lower notes.
