About this banjo
The Workhorse CM-3 Deluxe has all the powerful features of the Workhorse line with luxurious accents which create a rich custom look.
The Workhorse CM-3 Deluxe features a curly maple figured neck and resonator. The satin nitro-cellulose lacquer finish with light golden brown stain creates an impressive look and feel.
The 844 tone ring used in every Workhorse is poured at the same foundry as our HR-30 ring and machined right here in the shop to the same pre-war specifications as all of our tone rings. The banjo has a classic 1930’s look (because we love pre-war banjos) with a double-cut peghead and our 1941 “leaves & bows” inlay pattern.
Gold-plated parts with engraving on the tension hoop, armrest and tail piece give a custom look which echoes classic vintage instruments.
Now, the Workhorse provides an economical, professional grade instrument that could become a lifetime banjo for some of our customers.
Banjo Specifications
CURLY MAPLE NECK & RESONATOR
Figured flame maple is used for the Workhorse CM-3 Deluxe necks.
Huber necks are known to be the most comfortable and easy playing necks being made today. Produced using computer aided machining technology, each neck is crafted to the exact specifications every time!
Matching the grain in the neck, the Workhorse CM-3 Deluxe resonator has an overlay of curly maple. Resonators are built by Steve’s dad, Jack Huber, in Lancaster PA.
HUBER ‘VINTAGE’ RIM
The Huber “Vintage” Rim is manufactured from 3-plys of hard maple by Bryan Sims, exclusively for Huber Banjos. They are then turned to size and finished at the Huber shop.
INLAY PATTERN
The “Workhorse” series banjos all have a classic 1930’s look (because we love pre-war banjos) with a double-cut peg-head and the abbreviated “leaves & bows” inlay pattern.
WORKHORSE NAMEPLATE
The nameplate inlay at the 21st fret is engraved “Workhorse”.
WAVERLY V-2 TUNERS
All of the Huber Banjos come with Waverly V-2 tuners installed. The V-2s work very well and closely approximate the look of those found on vintage banjos. The tapered underside of the peghead washer helps protect the headstock and the internal low-friction bushings help ensure smooth operation.
TWO-WAY ADJUSTABLE TRUSS ROD
In a deviation from the pre war specs, we use a two way adjustable truss rod in our necks. The two way rod allows for adjustments in both directions – you can add relief or reduce bow as needed.
The rod is accessible through a cavity in the headstock, just behind the nut.
EBONY FINGERBOARD
The Workhorse Series banjos feature an Ebony fingerboard.
SATIN FINISH/ WHITE BINDING
Our Workhorse CM-3 Deluxe model is finished in a light golden brown stain and satin lacquer. The sides of the resonator and neck are bound in white binding.
GOLD PLATED & ENGRAVED HARDWARE
The Workhorse CM-3 Deluxe” features beautiful gold plated and engraved parts.
The armrest and tension hoop feature Granada engraving while the tailpiece sports the “Border” pattern.
The hardware consists of a single piece, pot metal flange, notched brass tension hoop, steel hooks, brass one-piece armrest, brass resonator hardware and steel coordinator rods.
CLAMSHELL STYLE TAILPIECE
Like the storied pre wars which inspired them, the “Workhorse MG-3 Deluxe” banjo features a Clamshell-style 2-hump tailpiece.
MAPLE BRIDGE WITH EBONY TOP
The Huber bridge is made of carefully selected maple and designed for tone, volume and clarity. A special glue is used between the ebony and maple to ensure maximum vibrational transmission. String slots are cut with a custom-built slotting machine that produces the exact depth, spacing and angle every time.
As a part of the final assembly and set up process, Steve will try several bridges on each new banjo until he finds one that “agrees” with the tonal voice of the instrument.
The Huber bridge is also available as a separate accessory item order.
THE 844 TONE RING
The “844′ Tone Ring is actually no stranger to the Huber shop. We have been making this tone ring and private labeling it to other builders for the past 12 years. It is a bronze alloy that makes a great tone ring. The Workhorse banjos provides us, for the first time, the opportunity to offer this tone ring under the Huber brand.
HUBER HEAD
Through a special arrangement with Remo, Huber installs a head on each new banjo that is manufactured to his custom specifications. Steve finds that they offer a superior tone to that of the stock Mylar heads offered for banjo.
These Huber heads can also be ordered as a separate, after-market accessory item.
LINED HARD- SHELL CASE
Each Huber banjo is shipped in its own plush lined hard shell case. These cases are made especially for Huber and to his specifications. The top lid is arched for superior protection and a comfortable leather handle is installed for ease of transport.
LIFETIME LIMITED WARRANTY
Every Huber Banjo is warranted to the original owner without time limit, often described as a “Limited Lifetime Warranty.”
Any defect in material or workmanship, except heads, strings and pegs will be repaired or replaced free of charge to the original owner, if returned to our factory, charges prepaid.
Bonuses When You Order From Banjo.com
- 5th String Railroad Spike Capos – FREE
We can add these as a free service when you purchase a banjo from us. When you add this banjo to your cart just select that you want the capos. What is this? When you use a standard capo on your banjo fretboard, fretting strings 1 through 4, you’ll need to capo the 5th string separately. The 5th string starts at the 5th fret. If your standard capo is on the 2nd fret, you also need to capo the 5th string two frets higher, at the 7th fret. We recommend installing railroad spike capos on frets 7 and 9 (A and B). We install them on the fretboard just under the 5th string, an idea that was developed and used by Earl Scruggs himself. We use them, and so do most of the professional players we know. When you’re playing, you don’t really notice the spikes because they’re out of the way, but they’re always there when you need them. Simply slide the 5th string under the spike. When you’re done, slide it out. - Banjo Starter Pack – FREE
